  • 1957 Elvis Presley purchases a mansion in Memphis, Tennessee and calls it Graceland.

  • 1957 John Lennon and Paul McCartney (The Beatles) first meet at St. Peter's Church garden fete in Liverpool, England.

  • 1976 The Who's Keith Moon collapses onstage ten minutes into a performance at the Boston Garden.

  • 1976 Judas Priest release their second album Sad Wings of Destiny.

  •  1982 Ozzy Osbourne's lead guitarist, Randy Rhoads is killed in a freak accident in Leesburg, Florida when the plane he's riding in buzzes Osbourne's tour bus and crashes into a house. The plane's pilot and a female passenger are also killed.

  • 1963 - The Kinks form.

  • 1966 - The Beatles' John Lennon is quoted in the London newspaper, The Evening Standard as saying that the band was now more popular than Jesus. In August, following publication of this remark in Datebook, there are Beatles protests and record burnings in the Southern US's "Bible Belt".

  • 1969 During a performance at Miami's Dinner Key Auditorium, Jim Morrison of the Doors is arrested for allegedly exposing himself during the show. Morrison is officially charged with lewd and lascivious behavior, indecent behavior, open profanity and public drunkenness.

  • 1974 The Ramones play their first concert at the Performance Studio in New York.

  • 1965 The Supremes have their fourth number one single, "Stop! In The Name Of Love"

  • 1967 The Velvet Underground release their debut album, The Velvet Underground & Nico.

  • 1967 Kicking off a tour with The Walker Brothers, Cat Stevens and Engelbert Humperdinck at The Astoria London, Jimi Hendrix sets fire to his guitar on stage for the first time. He is taken to hospital suffering burns to his hands. The guitar-burning act would later become a trademark of Hendrix's performances.

  • 1968 The Yardbirds record their live album Live Yardbirds at the Anderson Theater.

  • 1960 Elvis Presley returns home from serving in the US Army.

  • 1979 Eric Clapton marries Patti Boyd, ex-wife of Clapton's friend George Harrison
