Month of JANUARY  

1962 - The Beatles and Brian Poole and the Tremeloes both audition at Decca Records, a company which has the option of signing one group only. The Beatles are rejected, mainly as they come from Liverpool and the others are Dagenham-based nearer London.

1972- Pink Floyd debuts Dark Side of the Moon during a performance at The Dome, in Brighton, but due to technical difficulties, is halted during the song 'Money'. Dark Side of the Moon would be played in its entirety the next night. It would be a full year before the album was released.

1978 The Sex Pistols played their final show (until a 1996 reunion) at San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom.

1970 Simon & Garfunkel release their final album together, Bridge Over Troubled Water. The title track and album stay #1 on the Billboard charts for six weeks and go on to win a record six Grammys at the 13th Grammy Awards, including "Record of the Year", "Song of the Year", and "Album of the Year." In Britain it tops the album chart at regular intervals over the next two years, and becomes the best-selling album in Britain during the 1970s.

 1960 Frank Sinatra forms his own record label, Reprise Records, which would later release recordings by The Beach Boys, Ella Fitzgerald, The Kinks and Jimi Hendrix.

In 1975 Approximately 1000 Led Zeppelin fans cause an estimated $30,000 in damage to the lobby of the Boston Garden. The fans had been waiting for tickets to go on sale for Led Zeppelin's February 4 concert. The fans reportedly broke chairs and doors and caused other damage to the building. Boston Mayor Kevin White cancels the upcoming show.

In 1982 B. B. King donates his personal record collection, which includes nearly 7,000 rare blues records, to the University of Mississippi's Center for the Study of Southern Culture.

1993 saw Cream reunite for a performance at their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Los Angeles, California, USA.[2] Other inductees include Creedence Clearwater Revival, Ruth Brown, The Doors, Van Morrison, and Sly & The Family Stone.

2009 Madonna announces that she will extend her record-breaking Sticky & Sweet Tour during summer of 2009, to visit cities that were excluded during the first run. The tour will kick-off in The O2, London on July 4. The extension will take Sticky & Sweet Tour to a total of over 80 shows, putting it among the top five tours of all time.[

In 1999 Britney Spears releases her debut album, ...Baby One More Time, which would go on to sell an huge 30 million copies. The album hits number one on the charts. The title track and first single released from the album, also hits number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1999.
