1960 Frank Sinatra forms his own record label, Reprise Records, which would later release recordings by The Beach Boys, Ella Fitzgerald, The Kinks and Jimi Hendrix. 1962 - The Beatles and Brian Poole and the Tremeloes both audition at Decca Records, a company which has the option of signing one group only. The Beatles are rejected, mainly as they come from Liverpool and the others are Dagenham-based nearer London. 1963-Gary U.S. Bonds files a $100,000 lawsuit against Chubby Checker, claiming that Checker stole "Quarter to Three" and turned it into "Dancin' Party." The lawsuit is later settled out of court. 1964-Top of the Pops premieres on BBC television. 1965-The Animals appear a second time on The Ed Sullivan Show 1965-Downtown" hits #1, making Petula Clark the first British female vocalist to reach the coveted position since the arrival of The Beatles 1966-Young singer David Jones changes his last name to Bowie to avoid being confused with Davy Jones of the Monkees 1967-The Monkees begin work on Headquarters, the first album to give them complete artistic and technical control over their material. 1967-The Rolling Stones appear on The Ed Sullivan Show. At Ed Sullivan's request, the band change the lyrics of "Let's Spend the Night Together" to "Let's spend some time together". 1968-Guitarist Jimi Hendrix is jailed by Stockholm police, after trashing a hotel room during a drunken fist fight with bassist Noel Redding 1968-– Johnny Cash performs his famous concert at Folsom State Prison in California. 1969-Pete Best wins his defamation lawsuit against the Beatles. Best had originally sought $8 million, but ended up being awarded much less 1969-Led Zeppelin's eponymous debut album released 1969-Guitarist Jimi Hendrix is accused of arrogance by British television producers after playing an impromptu version of "Sunshine of Your Love" past his allotted timeslot on the BBC1 show Happening for Lulu. 1970-Former Pink Floyd frontman Syd Barrett releases his first solo album The Madcap Laughs 1970-Diana Ross and the Supremes perform for the last time together at the Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas 1970 Simon & Garfunkel release their final album together, Bridge Over Troubled Water. The title track and album stay #1 on the Billboard charts for six weeks and go on to win a record six Grammys at the 13th Grammy Awards, including "Record of the Year", "Song of the Year", and "Album of the Year." In Britain it tops the album chart at regular intervals over the next two years, and becomes the best-selling album in Britain during the 1970s. 1972- Pink Floyd debuts Dark Side of the Moon during a performance at The Dome, in Brighton, but due to technical difficulties, is halted during the song 'Money'. Dark Side of the Moon would be played in its entirety the next night. It would be a full year before the album was released. In 1975 Approximately 1000 Led Zeppelin fans cause an estimated $30,000 in damage to the lobby of the Boston Garden. The fans had been waiting for tickets to go on sale for Led Zeppelin's February 4 concert. The fans reportedly broke chairs and doors and caused other damage to the building. Boston Mayor Kevin White cancels the upcoming show. 1976-Kenneth Moss, a former record company executive, is sentenced to 120 days in the Los Angeles County Jail and four years probation for involuntary manslaughter in the 1974 drug induced death of Average White Band drummer Robbie McIntosh 1977-The Clash headline the gala opening of the London music club, The Roxy. 1978 The Sex Pistols played their final show (until a 1996 reunion) at San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom |
